The
CEDARVILLE was built in 1927 at Great Lakes Engineering Works in River
Rouge,
Michigan
. She was originally built
as a bulk freighter under the name A. F. HARVEY. She was converted
to a self-unloader in
Bay City
Michigan
in 1957 and re-christened CEDARVILLE.
On
May 7, 1965 while sailing in a dense fog near the
Mackinac
Bridge
, the 588 foot vessel was rammed by the Norwegian freighter
TOPDALSFJORD. The collision
caused a mortal wound to the CEDARVILLE which rolled and
sank while
trying to make it to shallow water.
Ten of her crewmembers were lost,
with 25 men surviving in the frigid spring waters of the Straits of Mackinac.
Today, the wreck lies in approx. 105 feet of water.
However her cabins and other areas of the ship can be reached at
shallower depths of 50 to 75 feet. She
is cracked amidships and lies tipped to her starboard side at about a 45
degree angle. While remaining in excellent condition of many years, the
vessel has begun to collapse in recent years.
